Webster's New World Dictionary
defines "sacred" as (1) "holy;
set apart for some holy or religious purpose.
(2) Given or deserving the greatest respect. (3)
That which must not be broken or ignored; as a
'sacred' oath."
"Liturgy" is defined as "the form
or order of worship in a religious service."
Therefore,
"Liturgical" and
"sacred" dance in today's world is distinct
from other dance that is ordinarily done in the
widespread community. This dance is specific movement
or choreography that is set apart for the express
purpose of harmonizing with a form of liturgy
or order of worship. Historically, dance was originally
rooted in religious worship.
Marie Plauche'-Gustin defines sacred
or liturgical dance as "creative movement
expressing the manifestation of the Spirit of
God, in God's glorious goodness in Creation and
Humanity, expressing the truth of God in all aspects
of life."
Or more simply put, "One movement,
done well, with the right intent of the heart
can change a life."
